Colouring Rainbows debute EP, “Songs You Didn’t Expect”, is exactly that. The one woman band that is Jessica Müller takes the listener through an experimental rollercoaster that teleports the listen through the strange and the unusual, and this is a great thing.
If you took, one part Electronica, Post-hardcore, Ambient, a dash of metal, and stuck them in a blender, Colouring Rainbows would be the tasty drink that would come out. With a mixture of singing and screaming, the CD places the listening in an Ambient like trance before being kicked out by the heavy drum and bass only to be pulled back and punched in the face by the screams that come from the most unlikely of places, and continues to keep this flow going as the CD is made as if it was one big track. The nerd listeners will get a slight urge of glee from the 8bit intro to “A Word with Miley”, a big FU to the girl we hate to love and love to hate, Miley Cyrus.
All in all, “Songs you Didn’t Expect” as a ride that many can enjoy regardless of your tastes, and worth checking out.
